The “Scheme for Grant of Additional Scholarship to the Students of Other Backward Classes of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, for Pursuing Higher Studies Anywhere in India after Secondary Level (Except Class XI & XII)” was initiated by the Department of Social Welfare, Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This scheme aims to offer supplementary financial assistance in the form of scholarships to OBC students from the non-creamy layer in Andaman & Nicobar Islands, enabling them to pursue higher education in Government-recognized Polytechnic/ITI/College/University anywhere in India.

Duration of Scholarship: Once awarded, the scholarship remains valid from the point of its grant to the student until the completion of their course, contingent upon good conduct and regular attendance, as attested by the Head of the Institution.

Funding: The Department of Social Welfare, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, oversees the implementation of this scheme.

Benefits

Value of Scholarship: Under this scheme, eligible students from the OBC category will receive ₹1000 per month.

Payment and Disbursement Method: The scholarship will be disbursed over a duration of ten months per academic session. It is applicable to students who have successfully completed the previous academic session (e.g., after passing Class XI/Class XII, eligibility begins upon completion of the first year of higher education or a professional course). The scholarship amount will be directly credited to the beneficiary’s Aadhaar-linked bank account by the Department of Social Welfare.

Eligibility

  1. Eligibility Criteria:
    • Open to students from the non-creamy layer of OBCs in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
    • Must be domiciled in Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
    • Passed Secondary (Class X)/Senior Secondary (Class XII) from a recognized board.
    • Pursuing higher education in a recognized Institution/University.
  2. Family Limitations:
    • Only two children of the same parent/guardian can receive the scholarship.
    • In case of multiple births from the second delivery, all eligible for the scholarship.
  3. Courses Eligible:
    • Degree and Post-Graduation courses.
    • M.Phil, Ph.D., and Post-Doctoral programs.
    • Post-Doctoral Research in various fields including Medicine, Engineering, etc.
    • Post-Graduate Diploma courses in Management, Medicine, etc.
    • Professional courses like CA, ICWA, CS, etc.
    • Graduate/Post-Graduate Courses in areas like Pharmacy, Nursing, Law, etc.
    • Vocational courses post Secondary Level (Class X) such as ITI, Polytechnic Diploma, etc.
  4. Conditions for Scholarship:
    • Awarded annually, contingent upon passing exams.
    • Transferable to other recognized courses if the original course is not completed.
    • Discontinued if a student fails for more than one year.
    • Scholarship may be revoked and recovered if obtained under false pretenses.
  5. Additional Notes:
    • Students pursuing Medicine post-graduation are eligible but cannot practice during the course.
    • Liability to refund if studies are discontinued during the year.
  6. Renewal Criteria:
    • Renewed annually based on academic performance and promotion to the next class.
    • Exceptions possible for illness or unforeseen events with proper documentation.

Online Application Process

  1. Registration:
    • Visit NSP Portal URL: https://scholarships.gov.in/.
    • Click on “New Registration” and provide accurate information as per your documents.
  2. Receive Student Registration ID:
    • Upon successful registration, you will receive a “Student Registration ID”.
  3. Login to Account:
    • Use your “Student Registration ID” to log in via the “Fresh Application” icon on the NSP Portal.
  4. Access Application Form:
    • After logging in, click on the “Application Form” icon to access the application screen.
  5. Fill Out Application:
    • Complete all sections of the application form.
  6. Submit Application:
    • Click “Final Submit” to submit your application.
  7. Confirmation:
    • After submission, a system-generated registration number will be sent to you for future reference.

Note:

  • The Department announces scheme details and invites applications annually in May-June through advertisements in leading newspapers and other media.

Required Documents

  1. Passport-size photograph
  2. Certificates of Class X/XII Diploma/Degree or equivalent qualifying examinations
  3. Caste certificate signed by an authorized revenue officer (not below the rank of Tehsildar)
  4. Non-creamy Layer Certificate signed by an authorized Revenue Officer (not below the rank of Tehsildar)
  5. Income Certificate
  6. Receipt of acknowledgment of scholarship if received under this scheme in the preceding year
  7. Copy of marks statement duly counter-signed by the Head of the Institution for scholarship renewal
  8. Copy of Aadhaar Card
  9. First page of bank passbook
